EU signs on to IRENA

The European Union (EU) has agreed to abide by the statutes of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

The statutes were signed by State Secretary Ola Altera, representing the Swedish EU Presidency, and European Commissioner for Energy Andris Pielbalgs, in a ceremony in Berlin.

"Now Europe is further increasing its focus on renewable energy so that, step-by-step, we can leave the fossil society in favour of climate-smart solutions in an eco-efficient economy," said Altera, the Emirates News Agency (WAM) reports.

IRENA, based in Abu Dhabi, was established in January 2009 and already counts 137 countries as members.
