Survey on Women’s Workforce in the Bioenergy Sector

Women’s global workforce adds up to 40% [1], yet only 1 in 5 workers in energy jobs is female [2]. An analysis conducted by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in 2025 shows that women hold 32% of (full-time) jobs in the field of renewable energy [3], already portraying a significant difference to the share of ~20% within all energy jobs.

While the IRENA study investigates the share across the whole sector of renewable energies, there is no similar study covering the specific field of Bioenergy yet. Trying to fill this gap, the World Bioenergy Association (WBA) is starting an annual survey, aiming for insights on the share and distribution of women in the sector. Collecting data on personal information as well as background details on the type of positions and companies, it also allows for drawing conclusions on the extent to which gender equality is present in different roles, fields and organisations. The survey seeks to lay the groundwork for a continuous study, allowing for an analysis how the situation evolves in the upcoming years.

It is targeted to employees within the Bioenergy sector, answering individually or on behalf of their organisation. With the former allowing for detailed insights on gender/education and age distribution as well as the variation within positions, the latter is equally valuable delivering an overview of the general share of female employees within the Bioenergy sector.

We kindly invite everyone to participate in the survey, no matter the gender. Your privacy is of course respected, and results will be shared anonymously. The survey is running until 22.05.2026 and can be accessed via the following link.
