Coal accounts for more than 70% of India’s power generation today, according to the International Energy Agency. Solid biomass provides an opportunity to curb this demand today while solar, wind and other clean energy solutions gain share – and India has abundant biomass supply potential. The SAMARTH mission (National Mission on the use of Biomass in Thermal Power Plants) was launched by the Ministry of Power in July 2021 to reduce the carbon footprint of thermal power generation and to address the issue of air pollution due to stubble burning. The mission mandates all thermal power producers (TPPs) to co-fire 5% to 7% biomass pellets. However, the actual consumption is less than 0.1%.

Significant challenges have been reported related to technology, finance, logistics and supply chains. To address the concerns and to exchange best practices in co-firing biomass with coal, the World Bioenergy Association is organizing the first webinar in the Bioenergy India series: ‘Solutions for reducing India’s coal use in power today. The role of biomass’. The event will convene policy makers and industries including biomass producers, traders, and utilities to share experiences on biomass co-firing.
