The bioeconomy supporting the European Green Deal

The world is hotting up - It’s urgent we accelerate the biotransition

We all know time is running out to respond to a world that is getting dangerously hotter.

To ensure that we leave a habitable world for future generations, it is imperative in our fight against climate change that we accelerate the deployment of viable solutions, such as those embodied in the bioeconomy and bioenergy.

This means solutions designed to decarbonise energy production, transport, industry, produce renewable materials for chemicals, packaging, consumer products, the list goes on.

In short, accelerating the transition to the bioeconomy, in place of our historical fossil model, is what we need to face up to and do. Right now.

Bio360 Expo Exhibition

Set within the broader context, Bio360 Expo seeks, by delivering a “must” meeting point for all interested stakeholders engaged in accelerating the biotransition, to play its own part in realizing the ambition of the European Green Deal.

The European Commission has published a factsheet* highlighting the importance of Europe's bioeconomy to achieving the EU Green Deal.

« The bioeconomy, as a catalyst for systemic change, tackles the economic, social and environmental aspects of the Green Deal, seeking new ways of producing and consuming resources while respecting our planetary boundaries and moving away from a linear economy based on extensive use of fossil and mineral resources.

A circular and sustainable bioeconomy has the potential to contribute to all dimensions and objectives of the European Green Deal by:

  • Delivering on Europe’s economic prosperity and ensuring a fair and just transition.
  • Producing fossil-free materials for a climate-neutral future.
  • Enhancing the protection of the environment and ecosystems. »

Bio360 Expo 2022

Bio360 Expo is a an internationally reputed reference event for the sector which brings together and showcases over two-days, diverse and complementary biomass value streams that are making an important contribution already today to displacing fossil fuels from our day to day lives.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

The event comprises a comprehensive international conference programme with simultaneous translation, study tours, the innovation competition, and more besides. Full programme details can be found on the website www.bio360expo.com in the run-up to the event.

In a nutshell:

  • Key numbers anticipated for 2022: 8000 participants, 500 exhibitors, 40 countries, 100 international speakers.
  • bilingual conference rooms with simultaneous translation
  • a panel of global expert speakers
  • a rich programme covering a diverse range of topical subjects
  • unfettered access to 500 exhibitors from across the planet showcasing some of the world’s most innovative, dedicated and promising solution providers
  • the opportunity to engage with some of the leading thinkers and influencers from across the bioeconomy and bioenergy sectors
  • industrial sites visits in and around the local area
  • the innovations of the moment unveiled at the prize giving ceremony of the innovation competition
  • hybrid options for those unable to attend in person

WHERE IS IT GOING?

Thematically the event broadens its horizons each year to both anticipate and keep pace with this fast-evolving sector.

This too is part of the role of Bio360 Expo, to be open to new ideas and “out of the box” thinking but simultaneously to be a platform that enables proper evaluation and questioning in order to make sage choices for our age … and more to the point, for those still to come.

Whilst progress is being made today in terms of technical innovation, policy scope and ambition, financing mechanisms, regional support, capacity building etc. in favour of advancing the bioeconomy and bioenergy, in parallel, Bio360 Expo also keeps a close eye on evolving trends, possible future constellations and market configurations and to put them up for scrutiny and constructive examination in order that we make the right future directional choices.

With global warming and climate change baring down upon us, time is not on our side and the permissible ratio of “trial-and-error” is very limited.

EXHIBITORS

International companies working and pioneering in the following fields, covering the full- bioeconomy and bioenergy cycles, exhibit at Bio360 Expo

  • Solid bioenergy: biomass and wood-energy, solid waste recovery, forestry and agricultural co-products for cogeneration, district and industrial heating, renewable green gas, etc.
  • Liquid bioenergy: biofuels for the road, maritime and aviation transport sectors
  • Gaseous bioenergy: biogas, biomethane, bioNGV, green hydrogen* for local consumption or broader distribution
  • Biobased materials and products*: materials and products derived from the biosphere as opposed to the geosphere (fossil), e.g. bioplastics, biochemicals, biomaterials, biopharmaceuticals, biotextiles, biocoatings, bioadditives etc.
  • Biochar*: biochar has a large evolving range of usages from agriculture and soil management, for livestock, water management, construction, biocomposites etc and is one of the few Negative Emissions Technologies as identified by the IPCC. With biochar, large volumes of excess atmospheric C02 can be extracted and sequestered
  • Carbon capture and utilization / storage (CCU/S): capturing and utilising C02 is a key tool for reducing net future carbon emissions and can equally make a significant contribution to fossil displacement through downstream processing leading to a large range of products (chemical, fuels, materials… the list goes on), the end goal being to achieve a world where all carbon is renewed** and all carbon resident in the geosphere (fossil carbon) remains locked where it is..

*New sectors presented at Bio360 Expo 2022

** There are only three sources of renewable carbon. Renewable carbon comes from sources which can be (re)grown (biosphere), (re)captured (technosphere & atmosphere) or (re)cycled (technosphere).

VISITORS

8000 decision makers are expected to attend (12% international) from all of the above sectors as well as from agriculture, agri-food, waste management, forestry and the wood industry, consultancy, energy, finance, industry, press, public bodies and institutions, federations and umbrella organisations, legal, to name but a few.

OUR HISTORY

With a history dating back to 1998, when renewables were still termed alternative and notions of the bioeconomy were just “apples in the eye” of a handful of pioneering thinkers, our story begins.

Bio360 Expo today is in fact a grouping of three events organised historically by Bees: the Salon Bois Energie (2005-2020), Biogaz Europe (2010-2020) and Regen Europe (2018-2020). The Salon Bois Energie itself, famed for assembling the wood energy sector from A-Z was created by ITEBE in 1998 and was at the time the world’s first event for wood energy. It was acquired by Bees in 2005 and formed the basis for an evolving family of events for the bioenergy and bioeconomy sectors that culminates today in Bio360 Expo, a cross-disciplinary event that enables and encourages the development of synergies between the different strands of the bioeconomy and bioenergy sectors.

WHO ARE WE?

Based in Lyon, Bees, the organiser of Bio360 Expo, is a small, multicultural and dedicated team of event professionals with a combined experience of over 60 years.

"Nailing our colours to the mast": ancient seafarer’s used to nail their colours to the mast in order to signal what they stood for and what they would fight to protect.

We do similarly and in our case, the colour is bright green!

This translates in our professional lives into a dedication to the transformative ambition of Bio360 Expo and in our day-to-day existence, we work in offices that are heated and cooled by biomass and are powered by a mix of renewables. We also get around largely with bioNGV, electric bicycles and public transport. We even sometimes cook with solar heaters or micro-scale biomass gasifiers… not to mention our Ooni wood or biogas fired pizza oven!! … i.e., we enjoy walking the talk as much as we can!
