WBA Press release from IPCC report
The first part of the IPCC’s 5th Assessment Report - “Climate Change 2013: The Physical Science Basis” was published in Stockholm on the 27th of September 2013. This report offers a broad range of information about the development of the climate in the past and presents four different scenarios about possible developments till 2100.
In the press release the WBA goes into further detail on the following subjects from the perspective of the bioenergy industry:
- Climate change is clearly linked to human activities
- Fossil fuel emissions now ten times higher than those of land use change
- Future climate change depends on the quantity of future greenhouse gas emissions
- Accelerated implementation of renewables is needed
- Bioenergy has a key role in future energy systems
WBA President Heinz Kopetz commented this outcome from the Stockhom meeting: “The report reveals an optimistic message. Mankind has still the choice to go for a moderate climate change in this century. Yet, this chance can only be realized, if the emissions of greenhouse gases, especially CO2 are reduced substantially in the years to come. If the emissions continue to increase as in the past, dramatic changes in the climate system will occur. In this sense the 5th report is a call for action to go for an accelerated deployment of renewable energies in order to replace fossil fuels”.
