The World Bioenergy Association (WBA) has joined ISO/TC 207/SC 7 – Greenhouse gas and climate change management and related activities – as a Category A Liaison. The subcommittee develops international standards for measuring, reporting and managing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) develops and publishes international standards across a wide range of sectors. Several ISO standards are directly relevant to bioenergy, including sustainability criteria for bioenergy supply chains (ISO 13065:2015), terminology and classification for biogas production, conditioning, upgrading and utilization (ISO 20675:2018), and fuel specifications and quality classes for solid biofuels (ISO 17225-1:2021). WBA previously participated as a liaison in the development of ISO 13065.
The work of ISO/TC 207/SC 7 is particularly relevant as ISO and the GHG Protocol are working together to harmonize existing GHG accounting standards and jointly develop new standards for GHG emissions accounting and reporting. Developments in these standards are important to follow for bioenergy stakeholders as they can shape how emissions from operations, products and value chains are calculated and reported.
As a Category A Liaison, WBA will be able to participate in the work of the subcommittee and its Working Groups, providing input and expertise from the global bioenergy sector as these standards are developed and revised.
