WBA Publishes Factsheet on Sustainable Aviation Fuels

The World Bioenergy Association (WBA), in collaboration with the Asia Sustainable Aviation Fuels Association (ASAFA), has published a new factsheet on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), offering a comprehensive overview of the technology, market, and policy landscape driving aviation decarbonization. The factsheet was authored by Gabriel Ho, CSO at ASAFA. 

Aviation contributes an estimated 2–3% of global CO₂ emissions and is one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize, as the sector continues to heavily rely on fossil fuels for long-haul flights. SAF is widely regarded as the single largest solutionavailable to the industry in the coming decades, with major roadmaps projecting it could deliver 65–80% of aviation's CO₂ reductions by 2050. Yet current production remains marginal, with global SAF output reaching only around 1 million tonnes in 2024, less than 0.5% of total jet fuel demand of roughly 300 million tonnes per year. Closing that gap, to an estimated 300–400 million tonnes needed annually by 2050, will require rapid, coordinated action across policy, finance, and feedstock supply chains, particularly in fast-growing markets like Asia-Pacific. 

The factsheet brings together the basics of the technology, latest figures, and policy developments to give stakeholders a clear, evidence-based reference point, including: 

  • Feedstocks and production pathways: Including HEFA, Fischer-Tropsch, Alcohol-to-Jet, and Power-to-Liquid e-fuels, along with their respective GHG reduction potential and blend limits. 
  • Environmental benefits, including lifecycle GHG savings and the role of SAF in decarbonization pathways drawing onoutlook scenarios. 
  • Key policy frameworks shaping the market across the EU, US, UK, Japan, and a fast-moving set of Asia-Pacific markets including Singapore, South Korea, Australia, and China, with a dedicated focus on ASAFA's 2030 targets for the region. 
  • Techno-economic considerations, covering production costs, capital requirements, and the investment gap standing between current supply and net-zero trajectories. 
  • Emerging technologies, including Methanol-to-Jet, next-generation Power-to-Liquid processes, and novel feedstocks under development. 

In the context of the SAF Factsheet publication, the lead author, Gabriel Ho, shared: "ASAFA supported the World Bioenergy Association in preparing its Sustainable Aviation Fuels factsheet, released in September 2026. The factsheet gives a concise overview of SAF's role in aviation decarbonisation, covering production pathways, the policy landscape, and the scale-up gap between current output and net-zero requirements.
