The World Bioenergy Association has released a new white paper, offering a current look at Brazil’s bioenergy sector, developed following our last General Assembly and participation at the BBEST Conference 2024 in São Paulo.
It is well known that Brazil has long been a global leader in bioenergy. With a diverse mix of policy enabling tools, infrastructure, and investment that drive the development of fuels ethanol, biodiesel, the production of bioelectricity, biogas, and emerging fuels like HVO and SAF, the country has built a robust system that meets national energy demands while aiming to advance climate and development goals.
The white paper outlines key trends observed in 2024, including record ethanol production, growing biodiesel output, increased biogas capacity, and emissions reductions from biofuels and bioelectricity. It also discusses policy frameworks, highlighting the recently enacted Fuel of the Future law, which sets new targets for blending mandates and investments in low-carbon fuels.
With COP30 on the horizon and set to take place in Belém, Brazil, the timing is significant. The white paper provides both a picture of current progress and a starting point for broader discussions about the role bioenergy can play in climate action, especially in countries with strong agricultural sectors and renewable energy potential.
The paper draws on national data and WBA’s own experience in the country to help contextualize Brazil’s bioenergy development and what it can offer to the global transition.
