New Webinars Series - Brazil Focus

Brazil is a bioenergy powerhouse. Abundant natural resources, favourable policies and incentives, innovations in supply chains, etc., have propelled the country to be one of the largest producers and consumers of biomass for energy. The sector has a diversified portfolio including ethanol and biodiesel production for transport, use of bagasse and residues for power generation, and development of emerging markets such as SAF. Moreover, the country is playing a leading role in international advocacy in promoting sustainable bioenergy development.

As Brazil prepares to host the UNFCCC COP30 conference in Belém in November 2025, the World Bioenergy Association is planning a series of three webinars to highlight the development of bioenergy. The purpose is to showcase key support structures to scale up bioenergy development and identify cooperation in the Global South for replicating the success of bioenergy development.

WBA is pleased to be partnering with our official magazine, Bioenergy International, and with The Bioenergy Society (Brazil) for the promotion of the webinar series. Participation is free, but registration is mandatory. The program is as follows:

Webinar 1: Brazil’s Bioenergy Success: Insights from Industry, Academia, and Policy

Date: September 9th, 2025

Time: 14.00 CEST / 09.00 BRT (UTC – 3)

Registration: Link

Brazil has established itself as a global leader in bioenergy, supplying nearly 50% of its domestic energy demand from renewable sources, with bioenergy representing a major share. The country is home to one of the world’s most advanced bioethanol programs and is the second-largest producer of biodiesel, supported by decades of policy frameworks such as the National Alcohol Program (Proálcool), the RenovaBio law, and recently the Fuel of the Future law.

Understanding how Brazil built this success story is key for countries seeking scalable, low-carbon energy solutions. The country has combined science-driven innovation, long-term policy commitments, and industrial investment to expand biomass use in transport, power generation, and emerging sectors like Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). This makes Brazil an important case study for designing sustainable and competitive bioenergy markets worldwide.

The World Bioenergy Association, in collaboration with The Bioenergy Society, is pleased to announce its first session of its webinar series leading to COP30. This webinar will bring together leading voices from industry, academia, and policy to examine the building blocks of Brazil’s bioenergy development. Speakers will share insights on technological advances in biofuels production, the role of national targets and incentives in driving investment, and the growing importance of bioenergy in meeting Brazil’s climate commitments under COP30.

Webinar 2: Brazil’s Role in South-South Cooperation to Scale Transport Biofuels

Date: October 7th, 2025

Time: 14.00 CET / 09.00 BRT (UTC – 3)

Registration: Link

Brazil has built one of the most successful transport biofuel markets in the world, producing over 35 billion liters of bioethanol annually and blending up to 14% biodiesel in diesel (B14) nationwide. Its long-standing ethanol program, flex-fuel vehicle fleet adoption, and supportive policies like RenovaBio have not only reduced greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector but also created a robust domestic and export market for biofuels.

As many countries in the Global South seek to decarbonize their transport systems, Brazil’s experience provides valuable lessons on scaling production, ensuring fuel quality and compatibility, and building long-term market confidence.

This webinar will analyze how Brazil’s expertise in feedstock cultivation, logistics, and regulatory design can support other regions in accelerating their biofuel adoption. Discussions will cover Brazil’s role in international biofuel alliances, key cooperation mechanisms with other developing economies, and strategies for addressing barriers like infrastructure limitations, sustainability standards, and investment risks.

Webinar 3: Future bioenergy opportunities: Emerging markets in Brazil and beyond

Date: November 4th, 2025

Time: 14.00 CET / 10.00 BRT (UTC – 3)

Registration: Link

Brazil’s bioenergy sector is entering a new growth phase, expanding beyond traditional ethanol and biodiesel to supply advanced fuels, power, and heat for multiple industries. The country is positioning itself as a key player in biomethane, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), with projects under development aiming to meet both domestic and export demand by 2030.

These emerging markets are critical for Brazil to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and carbon neutrality target by 2050, while offering replicable pathways for other regions. However, scaling these technologies will require infrastructure investment, clear sustainability standards, and stable market signals to attract capital and technology providers.

This webinar will explore Brazil’s next frontiers in bioenergy and the opportunities for knowledge transfer to other countries. Experts will present key developments in SAF, biomethane, and second-generation biofuels, highlighting ongoing pilot projects, expected production volumes, and enabling policies. Discussions will address the technical, financial, and regulatory challenges that must be overcome to move from pilot projects to commercial-scale deployment, and how cooperation with international partners can accelerate this process.
