World Bioenergy Association Releases White Paper on India's Bioenergy Landscape

The World Bioenergy Association (WBA) has released a comprehensive white paper examining the bioenergy landscape in India, highlighting its significant potential and role in meeting the country's energy and climate goals.

As the world's third-largest energy consumer, India is striving to balance its surging energy demand with sustainable and renewable sources. The white paper underscores bioenergy's importance, leveraging India's vast agricultural sector. The white paper highlights the numerous government incentives including tax exemptions, blending mandates, financial assistance etc.

Key findings reveal India's agro biomass power potential could exceed 35 GW by 2030. To realize this potential, the WBA recommends increased investment in research and development, enhanced policy support, strengthened supply chains, capacity building, and market diversification.

The report also shares the insights gained from WBA-organized roundtables in Goa and Delhi in February 2024 that emphasized the need for policy coherence, technological innovation, and improved logistics. Despite challenges, there is optimism about bioenergy's transformative growth in India.

This white paper is part of a series exploring bioenergy development globally. These papers go beyond conventional reports by providing in-depth qualitative analysis infused with WBA's first-hand experiences. This approach aims to offer a deeper understanding of the unique challenges, successes, and opportunities in each context. As part of our India outreach, the WBA is also organizing India focused webinars.
