The World Bioenergy Association proudly announces the launch of Propellets.Africa, a comprehensive online platform dedicated to advancing sustainable pellet production and usage across the African continent.
Africa stands out with the highest proportion of bioenergy in its energy mix, surpassing 50%. However, this reliance on traditional biomass, such as firewood and charcoal, has led to significant deforestation. According to the latest FAO report, Africa experiences an alarming net loss of forest area, averaging 3.9 million hectares annually. Recognizing the urgency to address this environmental challenge, WBA introduces Propellets.Africa as a catalyst for positive change.
The Propellets.Africa website serves as a repository of information and resources, documenting and supporting sustainable pellet production and use in Africa. Pellets, a cleaner and more sustainable alternative, offer a transformative solution to Africa's energy landscape.
The recently published FAO report underscores the critical need for action. Large-scale dependence on firewood and charcoal is a primary driver of deforestation, exacerbating environmental concerns. Propellets.Africa aims to shift this paradigm by promoting the use of pellets produced from abundant, unused agricultural residues or purpose-grown plants.
Pellets have the potential to play a pivotal role in achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including affordable and clean energy, good health and well-being, climate action, sustainable cities, and communities. The vibrant colors of the Propellets.Africa logo symbolize the multifaceted impact of this initiative across various sustainable development domains.
Pellet production offers an opportunity for local economic development, creating livelihoods while supplying low-cost, clean energy. Propellets.Africa envisions a future where Africa's energy supply is not only sustainable but also aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and promote a healthier environment.
The WBA invites stakeholders, policymakers, and communities to explore the Propellets.Africa website, engage in the wealth of information available, and join hands in fostering a sustainable bioenergy future for Africa.
