WBA releases Spring webinar series programme

Biomass is an abundant, versatile energy source and bioenergy is a critical part of the global net zero energy transformation – from clean cookstoves to large poly-generation energy plants and integrated biorefineries. Highlighting some of the issues and opportunities for the sector, the World Bioenergy Association (WBA), in collaboration with Bioenergy International has released its Spring webinar series programme.

The first-of-a-three-part webinar series, ‘Critical role of bioenergy in ensuring EU energy security’ takes place on April 25. Speakers from several national bioenergy associations will discuss the current critical role of bioenergy technologies in providing energy security and meeting socio economic conditions in the EU.  

– The current war in Ukraine has shown the fragility of the EU’s current energy system due to its dependence on conventional fossil fuel systems. Bioenergy is the largest renewable energy source in the EU, and the resilience of the renewable energy sector, especially bioenergy has shown how, in the current energy crisis, the sector has played a key role in providing reliable and continuous supply of energy to millions of citizens in the EU, says Dr Christian Rakos, President of WBA 

The second webinar ‘Latest technology developments in biomass pellet and briquette production’ will take place on May 23. Biomass is a versatile energy source, and the diversity of the feedstock characteristics, coupled with the demand for a standard fuel for energy purposes, leads to increased need for efficient processing technologies. Speakers from leading global technology companies will share the latest developments in biomass densification with case studies from around the world.

– Biomass densification is one such processing technology that enables the efficient transport of biomass in the form of pellets, briquettes, and bales from its source to where it is needed. The development of the wood pellet industry over the last two decades is testament to that, says Alan Sherrard, Editor-in-Chief, Bioenergy International.

The third webinar in the series, ‘Technologies for efficient conversion of biomass to heat and power’, will take place on June 22. To produce heat, primary conversion methods include combustion and gasification, and leading experts from global technology companies will share their perspectives on the latest developments in biomass to energy conversion and will highlight improvements in conversion efficiency, flue gas cleaning, and well as opportunities in the emerging carbon dioxide reduction space. 

– One of the primary end use sectors with a great need for bioenergy is residential and industrial heat. In the residential sector, biomass can be utilized either at homes or communities directly via boilers and stoves as well as providing renewable heat through district heating systems. In the industrial sector, as companies are planning a phase out of gas and oil, biomass solutions are offering ideal solutions, concludes Dr Rakos.
