Context
Austria is among the countries with a high share of bioenergy use – 16% of gross energy demand is covered by bioenergy. The focus of bioenergy development has been on the use of woody biomass, but biogas and biofuels are also used extensively. A long-term R&D focus on bioenergy technology over the last 40 years has led to highly developed technology and in some respects to global technology leadership. The visit will include an introduction to state-of-the-art technology for biomass use by gasification technology, both for small scale cogeneration and ultra-low emission combustion, biomass district heating, an introduction to forest management facilitating biomass use and pellet production.
