Launch of the Global Bioenergy Statistics Report 2025

The World Bioenergy Association (WBA) is pleased to announce the release of the 12th edition of the Global Bioenergy Statistics (GBS) Report.

The GBS report provides the latest information on the global energy mix, renewable energy status, biomass supply, biopower, biomass heating, and liquid and gaseous biofuels. It also features special case studies, including a regional overview of the European wood pellet sector, the ethanol industry in India, and biogas development in Brazil.

Some key highlights from the 2025 Report are:

  • In 2024, bioenergy electricity generation peaked at 698 TWh, a 3% growth on a year-to-year basis. Asia led this growth, with China alone accounting for 30% of the global output.
  • Bioenergy remains vital in the heat sector, accounting for 73% of global renewable heat production. Europe produced 75% of the global bioheat output, and in Asia, China covers almost half of the regional output.
  • In 2024, liquid biofuels supplied around 192 billion liters, representing 90% of renewable energy in transport, and 4% of total transport energy use.
  • Global biopower capacity reached 151 GW in 2024, with Asia's capacity nearly tripling since 2015, driven by major investments in China, India, and Japan.
  • Global biogas production hit 1,76 EJ in 2023, and biogas and biomethane generation capacity increased by 4% in 2023.
  • Investments in bioenergy are rising, led by liquid biofuels, with Brazil and the United States as key markets. In 2024, Europe made up 60% of global biogas investment.
