Biofuels soon a reality for commercial jets

Biomass-based jet fuel may start replacing petroleum fuels on commercial airliners within a year, according to Boeing executive.

"We've proven the technical capability of biofuel as a drop-in replacement," Bill Glover, managing director of environmental strategy for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, told the Greenwire news service.

"It meets all jet fuel requirements and then some."

Glover is leading Boeing’s efforts to develop and certify alternative jet fuels and has already been involved in four test flights in the last 18 months featuring a blend of biofuel and jet fuel.

A group led by Boeing plans on issuing a report on all the test flights next month, after which an international standards board may certify plant-derived biofuels for use in jets.
