Ms. Hélène Pelosse (France) elected as Interim Director-General of IRENA

Ms. Hélène Pelosse from France becomes Interim Director-General and Abu-Dahbi the interim HQ of IRENA

The Preparatory Commission of IRENA has designated Ms. Hélène Pelosse as its Interim Director-General during its second session in Sharm El Sheikh on 29 June 2009.

Ms. Pelosse is currently Deputy Head of Staff in the Private Office of the French Minister for Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development, and Town and Country Planning in charge of international affairs. She also managed the French negotiations for the EU’s Climate and Energy package, focusing in particular on the Renewable Energy Directive, and was responsible for designing the Renewable Energy Plan for France. Moreover, she took part in several international climate negotiations and has been intimately engaged with international organisations in the field of energy during her career (e.g. IEA, UNEP, UNDP).

Also the signatories designated Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, as the interim headquarters. At the same time it was decided that Bonn will host IRENA’s centre of technology and innovation and that in Vienna the Agency’s liaison office for cooperation with other organisations active in the field of renewables will be established. This reflects the spirit of cooperation that is needed for IRENA to grow into a strong and effective organisation.

IRENA now has more than 130 Member States.
